Jim and Dwight are sales men in the office and sit directly next to each other. While they are peers (someone of similar power or status (296)) they refuse to be friends throughout the entire series (until literally the last episode).
While the Interpersonal Communications book focuses more on how it is voluntary to be friends, Dwight and Jim choose to be the opposite. Continually, throughout the entire series, Jim plays pranks on Dwight and they bicker in every episode. Their characters completely conflict, having completely different personalities. With such conflicting characters, even while being in close proximity (how closely together they live or work and how often they interact (285)) they still refuse to get along. Typically people that are in close proximity learn to work well with each other but Dwight and Jim go against this trend but continual disagreement, which is playful for Jim but annoying for Dwight.
What is interesting about Dwight and Jim's relationship is while they do not like each other, they have a certain unspoken agreement to look out for each other when it really comes down to it. For example in Season 2, Episode 12, Dwight leaves the office in a hurry to get Michael from home, and while Dwight is speeding out of the parking lot, he hits a large pole, and hits his head on his stiring wheel. By the end of episode Jim realizes that Dwight has a concussion and brings him to the hospital, to make sure he gets the right medical attention.
