In Episode 22 of Season 2, the office throw a "casino night" to support a local charity. Jim and Pam are very good friends at this point. They consider each other best friends. They suport each other within the office and have become intimate friends.
At this time, Pam is engaged to Roy, a warehouse worker. He leaves the casino night early and Pam decides to stay. While Pam is saying goodbye to Royoutside, Jim comes outside. After Roy leaves Jim tells Pam he has to talk to here about something. Pam thinks nothing of it until Jim says, "I'm in love with you."
Pam says, "What am I supposed to say to that?" Jim tells her that he just had to tell her. Pam is worried about losing their great friendship and she is already engaged. After Jim expresses his affection (an emotional experience that includes feelings of love and appreciation that one person hace for another (158)) for Pam he starts to tear up and walk away.
Directly after this happens, Pam going inside to call her mother and tell her everything that just happened. Jim, even after seeing Pam's lack of returned affection, seeks out Pam again, except this time he kisses her, espressing intimacy (is a characteristic of close supportive relationships (159)) for the first time. She finally reciprocated the affection and kisses him back. The episode ends right there leaving everyone on their edge of their seat wondering where Jim and Pam's relationship is going to go.
